Engagement sessions are such a fun way to prepare for your wedding.  They provide great memories and images for your save the date and wedding as well as give you an opportunity to get comfortable with your Boise Wedding Photographer prior to the big day!  I am here to help you through each stage of the planning process but here are a few great tips to get you started!

1)      Invest in a professional hair and makeup artist for your Boise engagement photography session.  I can recommend some great options, or even set up the service on your behalf.  Professional makeup artists are able to do your hair and makeup in a way that photographs best.  You will be able to tell the difference in you final images and it’s great to have that professional look, especially if you plan to use these images for your save the dates or in your wedding guestbook.  This is also a great trial run time to try out your wedding day makeup and see how it looks in photos, this gives you the opportunity to make tweaks with your artist as needed.

2)      Wardrobe makes a big impact as well.  Typically my couples just change outfits once during the session.  I usually recommend one more casual outfit and one date night outfit.  This can be as low key or as fancy as you like.  You can be in jeans and a nice shirt or get a ball gown from Rent the Runway, just make sure to let your makeup artist know so she can ball gown up your makeup!  I would recommend using pinterest to help with your clothing selection.  Outfit selections will play a big part in making you look cohesive and like a couple!

3)      Choose a location that is beautiful or one that has special significance to your relationship.  As a Boise photographer familiar with the area, I am also happy to help with selecting a location if you don’t have a favorite in mind.  We can discuss how you would like your final engagement photographs to look and select a location to match.  Light plays a big part in the look of your images, I recommend starting about 90 minutes before sunset.  See my article on choosing when to have your session.

4)      Don’t stress and be ready to have fun! Most couples main goal is to have photos that don’t look posed but they worry they won’t know what to do! Fear not, as a Boise photographer, I can help! I’ll let you in on a little secret too, 99% of the images you see on my website are posed.  I will guide you towards exactly what to do and how to stand and capture your authentic expressions and reactions.

5)      Bring your dog! Some couples worry about bringing a pet along to their Boise Engagement photography session.  As a dog mom myself I know I want my fur babies in my images.  My only recommendation would be to plan to have your pup(s) in the first few images and them send them along on a walk or home with a friend or family member.  I’m unable to hold puppy leashes and get in focus images for you at the same time so it’s best to have a plan in place!

6)      Lastly, schedule a date night after, get dinner reservations in place and be ready for some fun.  People are usually hungry after a photography session and you are also going to look amazing! You’ll also likely be feeling snuggly with your fiancé after an hour of hugging and gazing longingly into each other’s eyes. So, why not continue it over dinner!
