I love taking engagement photos. Unlike the big day, when it’s my job to capture not just the couple, but their family, friends, props, venue, and more, engagement sessions are intimate. Often it’s just me and the couple I’m working with; no distractions, no pressure on them to hurry back to a hall full of guests. Instead, I encourage my couples to take a (much-needed!) breath and enjoy the experience.

Part of that enjoyment comes from feeling fully prepared. Like any other wedding-related event, engagement photos have their own set of “hacks” for getting the best outcome for your investment. Here are my six secrets to getting engagement photos that are absolutely stunning.

  1. Location, location, location. If you have a place that’s significant to your relationship, that’s perfect! If not, simply pick a spot you think is beautiful. New to the valley or unsure of where to go? Don’t worry! As a Boise photographer familiar with the area, I am also happy to help. We can discuss how you would like your engagement photographs to look and select a location to match. Light plays a big part, so I recommend starting about 90 minutes before sunset.
  2. Invest in a professional. And I don’t mean me! Professional hair and makeup artists can honestly elevate your look from good to great. You will be able to tell the difference in you final images, which is something to consider — especially if you plan to use these images for your save-the-dates or in your wedding guestbook. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to make use of a trial run on hair and makeup, prior to your wedding. I’m happy recommend a few professionals in the area, and I can even set up the service on your behalf.
  3. Dress to impress. Chances are you’ve already put some thought into the outfits you’ll both be wearing for your photos. If not, now is a good time to start! Typically, my couples change outfits once during the session. I usually recommend a casual outfit and a date night outfit, but feel free to get as low-key or as fancy as you’d like. Just make sure to let your hair and makeup artist know so they can adjust your look to match! 4. Bring the dog! I know I said it’s usually just me and the couple, but who could forget Fido? Some couples worry about bringing a pet along to their Boise engagement photography session. As a dog mom myself, I know I’d want my fur babies in my images. My only recommendation is to have your pup(s) in the first few photos and then send them home with a friend or family member. I’m unable to hold puppy leashes and get in-focus images for you at the same time, so it’s best to have a plan in place!
  5. Lastly, schedule a date night after, get dinner reservations in place and be ready for some fun.  People are usually hungry after a photography session and you are also going to look amazing! You’ll also likely be feeling snuggly with your fiancé after an hour of hugging and gazing longingly into each other’s eyes. So, why not continue it over dinner!
  6. Don’t stress, and have fun! A lot of couples worry about what to do in their photos because they don’t want to look posed. Fear not! As an experienced photographer, I can help. Just let me know what kind of tone you’d like to convey in your photos, and I’ll show you how to stand and where to look, all while capturing your authentic expressions and reactions.

Wedding preparations are a lot of work, and if you’re not yet elbows-deep in invitations, guest lists, and itineraries, you likely will be soon! But here’s some good news: Engagement photos are fun, and a great photographer (ahem) can make the experience truly once-in-a-lifetime. Questions? Comments? Get in touch and I’ll answer them all!
